Forests safeguard our home, the Earth, which is why we are protecting them worldwide. By supporting the REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) and Bonn Challenge initiatives, we are committing to forest restoration in Latin America, for example in Guatemala, Brazil, Colombia and Peru. Additionally, we are helping our partner countries to prevent deforestation in the production of agricultural products and to develop sustainable forest conservation business models.
The Bonn Challenge initiative on forest restoration, which was launched in 2011, will restore 150 million hectares of deforested and degraded land worldwide by 2020. The area of land being restored in Guatemala is almost as large as the federal state of Saarland.
The new business models with the private sector not only prevent deforestation, they also improve the standards of living for the people in the region. Model projects will, for example, establish value chains for agricultural products that enable the local population to earn additional income.
