In 2016, the tropical cyclone Winston destroyed large parts of the Fiji islands. For the people affected, rebuilding their homes is now a priority, but so is restoring the ecosystem. The International Climate Initiative is supporting projects in Fiji, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu geared towards environmental protection, sustainable management and restoration of ecosystems. This includes reforestation, planting corals, agroforestry and creating natural recreational areas.
The local people are very committed to the project because they know how important it is to restore their watershed areas and forests. Protecting natural resources also means adapting to climate change and securing the quality of water, food, homes and incomes.
